Give me women, wine, and snuff
Untill I cry out “hold, enough!”
You may do so sans objection
Till the day of resurrection:
For, bless my beard, they aye shall be
My beloved Trinity.
“Give me Women, Wine, and Snuff”
by John Keats [1795 –1821]
Women, Wine and Snuff
John Keats was the latest born of the great Romantic poets, following Byron and Shelley. During his short life, his work was not well received by critics, but his posthumous influence on next generating poets was impressive. The poetry of Keats was characterised by sensual imagery and tempest desires. He died in Rome when he was twenty five.
